Description

The orangery, located in the walled garden 300 metres northeast of Seaton Delaval Hall, is an early 18th-century structure, possibly designed by Vanbrugh. It is built from squared tooled stone that is of near-ashlar quality, with a pantile roof on the rear outshut. The front features a Roman Doric arcaded design with five bays. The round-arched openings have renewed glazing and are set beneath a metope frieze, which is topped with a moulded parapet adorned with pilasters and lead figures of dancing putti (which were away for repair at the time of the survey). The frieze and parapet continue around the sides of the building. The rear elevation has a central projection flanked by lower outshuts, featuring a boarded door, a 21-pane fixed window in the center, and 13 similar 9-pane windows below.
