Description
The Eglingham War Memorial is located in an enclosure on the north side of the main road through Eglingham, next to the village hall. Constructed from stone sourced from Old Denwick Quarry, the memorial features a wheel-head cross inspired by the Iona cross. The cross head and the upper part of the cross shaft are elaborately decorated with interlace patterns carved in low relief, while additional knot-work panels adorn the sides of the cross shaft.
The cross shaft is set upon a square pedestal that stands on a plinth, which is elevated by a two-stepped square base. The main dedicatory inscription on the front of the pedestal reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ IN HONOUR OF THE MEN/ OF THIS PARISH WHO FOUGHT/ AND IN EVER/ GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE/ OF THOSE WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918."
The names of 23 individuals who served in the First World War are inscribed on the front face of the plinth. The left side of the pedestal displays the dates 1939 – 1945, along with the names of three individuals from the Second World War listed below on the plinth. An admonition carved into the front face of the upper step of the base reads: "SEE YE TO IT THAT THESE SHALL NOT HAVE DIED IN VAIN."
The memorial is enclosed by a low stone wall and a wrought iron fence at the front, with planting at the rear.
