Description

These are a group of estate houses, numbered 9-12, located on The Square in Chillingham. They were built in 1836, as indicated by the date in the gables. Designed by Edward Blore for the Earl of Tankerville, they are constructed of roughly dressed stone with ashlar detailing around the windows. The roofs are covered in Welsh slate. The houses are arranged in a U-shaped plan, with projecting wings and porches that extend from the ends of the wings into a courtyard. The gables of the wings have overlapping coping stones and kneelers. Mullioned windows with 8 panes in each light are situated in the gable ends; other ground-floor windows are 16-pane sashes, all set in slightly recessed, chamfered surrounds. Dormers breaking the eaves, with 12-pane casements, are present on the upper floor, facing the courtyard. The building features substantial stone stacks, with three on the ridge and one projecting from each return. Small screen walls, featuring chamfered square piers and ridged coping, project from the porches to form a gateway to the courtyard. The gateway is marked by square gate piers topped with pyramidal caps.
