Description
The Stable Yard at Chillingham includes a coach house, bridge house, and west house, dating from the early 19th century. Constructed from pink dressed sandstone with Welsh slate roofs, the yard forms an approximately square layout with three sides enclosed by buildings. The architecture is restrained, employing Tudor detailing.
The main range is two storeys high. The central section features five carriage entryways with octagonal columns and chamfered Tudor arches. Pilaster strips flank the central section, each containing a doorway with a window above. Offices are positioned to the left and right, featuring wooden cross windows with diamond or small square paned casements on the ground floor, and two-light windows with iron casements above. A broad, stepped eaves cornice runs along the top of the building, and the roof is hipped with three stone ridge stacks, each with cornices.
The shorter left range is seven bays wide and features cross windows with square-paned casements on the ground floor and two-light windows above. It also has similar eaves and roof design. A plain wall, containing a central gateway between the ranges, completes the enclosure. Original doors are still present throughout the complex. An octagonal horse trough is located in the centre of the yard.
