Description

Chillingham Castle is a castle that dates back to the 14th century, with alterations made in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. John Patterson and Sir Jeffrey Wyatville carried out work in the early 19th century. The castle is primarily constructed of dressed stone and features a quadrilateral layout with four corner towers and connecting ranges, surrounding a central courtyard. To the left, there is a late 19th-century service wing.

The entrance front has a three-bay center that includes a basement and three stories, flanked by taller towers with even higher turrets. Steps lead up to a projecting early 17th-century centerpiece, which has paired Tuscan columns on all three floors. The ground floor features a round-headed doorway with moulded imposts and an arch, while the first and second floors have two renewed cross windows with another Tuscan column between them. Additional renewed cross windows are located to the left and right of the centerpiece on the upper two floors, and there are slit windows on the ground floor. Each floor has a frieze and cornice, with blank arches on the first two friezes and lozenges above the second floor. An achievement of arms is positioned above the top window, and four beasts with shields stand in front of the embattled parapet. The towers have sash windows under hoodmoulds.

Inside the courtyard, there is an early 17th-century two-storey addition, possibly featuring a rebuilt open arcade on the ground floor with segmental arches on square piers and small attached Ionic columns. Above the piers, there are six statues of Worthies on corbels, a staircase leading to the first floor, and a balcony on the second floor.

The interior includes tunnel-vaulted basements in the towers and ranges, newel stairs in the towers, an early 17th-century ceiling with pendants, two elaborate 17th-century overmantels, and a fine early 18th-century white marble fireplace adorned with satyr heads. The interior is in poor repair.
