Description

These estate houses, numbered 4 to 8 consecutively, were built in 1838 for the Earl of Tankerville and designed by Edward Blore. The construction utilizes roughly dressed stone with ashlar surrounds, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The houses are arranged in a U-shaped plan, encompassing six bays in total. The upper floors feature gabled dormers that break through the eaves, alongside gables to projecting wings, all adorned with overlapping coping stones and kneelers. Matching gables are found on porches that project into the central courtyard from the ends of the wings. The windows are chamfered and slightly recessed, with chamfered mullions in the gable-end windows. Original sash windows remain in place throughout. A single-storey addition extends to the right, consisting of three bays, with a two-bay outshut containing a chamfered doorway and a small window. A slender, square, tall chimney stack rises prominently. The main block is characterized by large, corniced stone chimney stacks; three along the ridge and one projecting from each side. Small screen walls with chamfered square piers and ridged coping extend from the porches, forming a gateway into the courtyard. Square gate piers are topped with pyramidal caps.
