Description
The Spital is a building from 1802, located on the site of the medieval St Giles' Hospital. It has two storeys and a basement, featuring three windows. The exterior is made of ashlar stone above a rusticated basement, topped with a hipped slate roof. The front is designed in a classical style, with a pedimented centre that projects forward and is accessed by curved flights of steps leading to a central doorway. This doorway has a large and elaborate fanlight, two leaf doors with sidelights separated by Doric columns, a fluted frieze, and panelled pilasters. The ground floor has glazing bar sash windows with architraves, entablatures with fluted friezes, and relieving arches. The building is finished with a cornice and blocking course, and the pediment features a stone urn and swags in low relief.
To the west, there is a lower two-storey annexe with two windows, as well as a hipped gabled extension that includes a lunette on the first floor and a Venetian window on the ground floor. There is also a further single-storey range with two windows. The north front has tripartite windows on a raised ground floor, set in relieving arches that contain rosettes, along with string and eaves courses. The extensions to the west are treated similarly to the main front, featuring a lunette and a Venetian window. The basement windows are segmental hooded within relieving lunettes.
Inside, there is a two-storey hall with a cantilevered staircase and landing, heavy Adam-style ceiling decoration, and some mahogany doors. An Anglian cross, previously mentioned in a list, is now located in St Andrew's Church.
