Description
The Stables of the Spital, built around 1802, is a notable structure made of ashlar. It features two end pavilions that are connected by a curved, re-entrant range. This range is two stories high and has a total of seven windows, arranged as 1 + 5 + 1. The roofs are slate and hipped over the slightly taller pavilions. The first floor has segmental-headed windows, and there are dormers on the sides of the re-entrant.
Each pavilion includes two rusticated round-headed coach openings with oeuils-de-boeuf above them. The east pavilion is residential, featuring two windows facing east, and there is a courtyard at the rear with a two-story range that has a nipped roof to the north. This range has five windows, segmental archways, and quoined doorways on the sides, and is constructed from rubble. The west pavilion has a hipped roof and is also made of rubble, with steps leading to a central first-floor door flanked by windows. At the rear of this pavilion, there are three segmental archways with openings above.
