Description
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Ninian, built in 1856 by George Goldie, is a notable example of 19th-century architecture. Constructed from snecked stone with a Welsh slate roof, the church features a nave, chancel, south-west tower, south aisle, north chapel, and vestry, all designed in a geometric style.
The tower's doorway has a multi-moulded pointed arch, with a three-light window above it that includes a gabled hoodmould over a blind centre light. The bell stage of the tower is adorned with paired cusped lancets. Additionally, there is a two-storey clasping stair projection topped with a pent roof. The steeply-pitched gabled roof is decorated with quatrefoils in the gables.
At the west end of the nave, there are two cusped lancets separated by a buttress that contains a niche, with a rose window positioned above. The four-bay nave has two-light traceried windows on the north side, similar lower windows on the south aisle, and quatrefoil clerestory windows. The two-bay chancel features cusped lancets and a five-light traceried east window, all under steeply-pitched gabled roofs.
Inside, the south arcade is supported by double-chamfered pointed arches resting on octagonal piers. A stained-glass window in the south aisle commemorates the architect George Goldie, while the east window was created by Wailes.
