Description
This is a churchyard memorial located about 20 yards south of the Church of St. Bartholomew in Kirkwhelpington, dating from 1790. It is made of ashlar and features a plain tablet with an arched top inscribed to William Atkinson, who died from a fall from his horse. The inscription reads:
"In an extensive business, Industry and Integrity brought him patronage and Respect. Stranger alike to servility and Oppression he studiously avoided to give offence to the Rich and cherished the laudable Endeavours of the poor. READER! That thou mayst merit the sigh and tear due to the memory of the good and just Like his Let thy life be useful and blameless."
On the rear of the stone, there is an earlier carving of cherubs, which commemorates a death from 1775.
