Description
No. 2 Bailiffgate, known as the Duchess's Girls School and formerly Derwentwater House, is a building reputedly constructed in 1797. It stands three storeys tall with a basement and features five windows. The exterior is made of plain ashlar, with a ground floor plat band, cornice, and parapet. The windows are glazing bar sash types. The central doorway is flanked by sidelights and topped with a relieving arch. The six-panel door has the top two panels raised and fielded, with a patterned rectangular light above and brackets supporting the lintel. There is a curved doorstep leading to the entrance.
On the east elevation, there are three bays with a plat band and cornice that returns; the central bay projects forward and includes a pediment within the parapet. The rear of the building also has three bays, featuring tripartite windows with relieving arches on the first and ground floors, as well as Venetian windows with pointed glazing in the centre light on the first and second floors. Inside, the building boasts fine carved Adam style chimney pieces.
