Description

This is a former brewery, now converted into a terrace of seven houses, with Archway Cottage divided into two flats. It dates from the early 19th century and has been altered since. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with dressings, with some rendered areas on the west range. The roofs are a mix of stone-flagged, concrete-tiled, and slate, with stone and brick chimneys. It has an L-shaped plan with an additional range at the rear of Oakland Nurseries.

The south range is comprised of seven houses, each three bays wide. Archway Cottage, at the west end, features an elliptical archway. Melkridge House, in the centre, has a six-panel door with a five-pane overlight, set within a pedimented stone surround flanked by canted stone bay windows with a cornice. Oakland Nurseries has an identical door and surround. Other windows are 12-pane sashes, and the range has a continuous steeply-pitched roof with two ridge stacks.

The west range, running from north to south, includes Blairochil and Burnlaw, as well as numbers 3 and 4, and part of Archway Cottage. This section has ten altered and scattered openings on the ground floor and six above. It shares similar roof and chimney details with the south range. A two-storey range of former farm buildings is located at the rear of Oakland Nurseries, with seven ground-floor openings, four above, and a low-pitched roof. The building occupies an important site within the village.
