Description

The Waterloo Stones, located 350 metres northeast of Newton Hall, are early 19th-century memorial stones made of sandstone. There are three upright, roughly-shaped headstone-like stones, each about 0.9 metres high, along with a larger recumbent slab positioned in front of the central upright stone.

The central upright stone bears the inscription 'NAPOLEON/FINALLY SUBDUED/BY WELLINGTON/AT WATERLOO/JUNE 18, 1815'. The recumbent slab is inscribed with 'G R/11 D N/WELLINGTON/LE MERCHANT/SALAMANCA/ENGLAND W.S.1/P JULY 22nd 1812/The above illustrious example/most nobly and gloriously followed/in the course of the same year/by Russia/Vittoria/June 21st 1815/Shannon/June 1st 1815/Liepsig/Oct, 1815'. The left upright stone is inscribed 'DANZO/THOMAS PHILIP/Sep 16 1813', and the right upright stone reads 'DANZO/N. JONES/Sep 16 1813'.

The 'Danzo' stones are believed to mark the graves of two French seamen who drowned on the Northumberland coast. These stones are included for their historical interest.
