Description
The blast furnace located on the west bank of Stocksfield Burn, 150 metres south of Wood Cottage, dates from the medieval period or the 17th century. It is constructed from large, roughly-squared stone and has a trapezoidal plan. The furnace opening is situated on the north side and is flanked by splayed wing walls that stand up to 2 metres high in some areas. The rear wall is in a more ruinous condition. This site is an important industrial monument that was excavated by Richardson in 1884 and has been recently re-examined.
