Description

West Farmhouse is a house dating from the mid-18th century, and possibly incorporating earlier fabric, with a rear extension added in the early 19th century. It is constructed of rubble with a squared stone front, roughly-cut quoins, and stone dressings, all covered by a slate roof. The building is two storeys high, with three bays, slightly irregular in their arrangement. A flush-panelled door is positioned left-of-centre. The windows are mostly 16-pane sashes, except for a tripartite sash on the ground floor to the right; all are set within raised, chamfered surrounds. Coped gables feature stone end stacks, with the stack on the left side being reduced in height. A single-storey bay is set back to the right with a 16-pane sash in a tooled-and-margined alternating-block surround; it has a coped gable with a stepped end stack. The returns show broad, low-pitched gables. Built into the left return, low down and to the left, is a stone section with a relief carving of a dolphin, likely dating from the 18th century. The rear elevation has a boarded door and various sashes, all with tooled-and-margined dressings. The interior was not inspected, but it is said that some of the walls are over one metre thick.
