Description
The garden walls and gates to the south of Apperley Farmhouse date from around 1930 and incorporate materials from the 17th and 18th centuries. The walls are constructed of rubble with dressed stone accents and feature wrought-iron gates. The flat-coped walls are lower on the south side, and the piers at the southern corners have low pyramidal caps. The main gate, located in the center of the south wall, is framed by tall cruciform piers made of tooled stone, which have stepped bases and moulded caps with a dentil cornice. This gate holds a screen with a segmental-headed gate, both adorned with arrowhead dogbars and a middle rail featuring scroll ornamentation. There is a scrolly overthrow, although it is damaged. A smaller 18th-century gate is situated at the north-west corner and has a 19th-century overthrow with a lantern. At the north-east corner, there is a blocked 17th-century doorway with a keyed lintel and a moulded cornice. The west wall contains three triangular-headed recesses, which feature a 19th-century carved slab depicting a civic dignitary and allegorical figures above.
