Description
Batt Cottage is a house dating from the mid-18th century, originally a farmhouse known as Bat House. It is constructed of rubble with roughly cut dressings, and has a 20th-century pantile roof with two courses of stone slates to the eaves. The main part of the house is two storeys and two bays wide. The central entrance is through an old plank door within an early 20th-century gabled porch with a depressed round arch. Above the arch is a stone dated 1836, featuring a chip-carved panel, and a triangular slab with a worn relief cross, possibly of medieval origin. The ground floor has 20-pane Yorkshire sash windows with external shutters. The upper floor has 12-pane Yorkshire sashes with timber lintels, all with slightly projecting sills. The gables are coped and have rebuilt end stacks. To the right is a former coach house with 20th-century small-paned casements and a coped gable. The kitchen fireplace has a chamfered stone surround, while the parlour fireplace has a round-arched raised stone surround with moulded bases, imposts, and a keystone. Old ceiling beams are also present.
