Description

Stagshaw House, with an attached gateway, is a mid-19th century house that was extended and altered in 1920 by Hicks and Charlewood. It is built of tooled-and-margined ashlar with raised quoins and features a graduated Lakeland slate roof. The south front is divided into three parts: the right section is the original house, which has three storeys and three bays. It has a plinth and a modillion eaves cornice. There are three steps leading up to a central glazed door with a patterned overlight, flanked by narrow sash windows, all beneath a cornice. Above, there is a 12-pane sash window in an architrave with a cornice on brackets. The flanking two-storey canted bays have renewed small-paned sash windows under moulded cornices. On the second floor, there are five plate-glass sash windows with patterned lintels. The hipped roof features two tall stepped ridge stacks with panelled shafts and broad swept cornices.

The attached gateway to the right has panelled piers and capitals topped with pomegranate finials, holding a decorative wrought-iron gate. The right return displays a projecting Tuscan porch with panelled double doors under a radial fanlight and a balustraded parapet. At the rear, there is a two-storey domestic wing.

To the left, there is a three-storey recessed linking bay with a first-floor band, a triple ground floor sash window from 1920, a first-floor 12-pane sash under a pedimented cornice, and a second-floor 12-pane sash. A large two-storey extension from 1920 on the left has three bays on each floor. The right part is set back behind a Tuscan tetrastyle portico with a balustrade above, while the left part features a central bow with a balustraded parapet. The hipped roof has a banded-and-corniced ridge stack.

Stagshaw House was formerly known as Stagshaw Close House and was first recorded in the early 18th century.
