Description
The Horncliffe War Memorial is a tall structure made of Red Doddington sandstone, located outside Berwick United Reformed Church on Main Street in Horncliffe. Designed in an early medieval style, the memorial takes the form of a cross, with its front surface intricately carved in elaborate interlace patterns.
At the base of the cross shaft, a principal dedicatory inscription reads: "IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY OF THE MEN OF HORNCLIFFE AND DISTRICT WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." The cross shaft rises from a tapering plinth that features a moulded foot and is set on a stone step with a concrete base.
The front face of the plinth lists the 16 names of those who fell in the First World War. Additionally, the foot of the plinth includes the quotation: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS," with the date range "1939 – 1945" and the note "(1 NAME)" on the riser of the step.
