Description

Oriel House and its coach house were originally built as the stable block and service wing for Callerton Hall in the 18th century by William Maughan. The building was extensively remodelled in 1892 by R. Norman Shaw. It is constructed of rendered stone with some ashlar dressings, and has Lakeland slate roofs. The building is arranged in an L-shape.

The garden front features a projecting wing on the left with a broad, elliptical carriage arch containing a keystone. In the re-entrant angle is an oriel window with a decorated wooden cornice. The main part of the building has 20th-century sash and casement windows on the ground floor, and above, two six-pane sashes within half-dormers featuring decorated wooden pediments. A cross-gabled bay is on the right. The roofs are gabled and hipped, with banded rendered stacks.

The entrance side exhibits similar detailing and includes an early 18th-century Gibbs surround.

At the rear of the projecting wing, which faces towards Callerton Hall, is a large, blocked elliptical carriage arch set within a raised ashlar surround, above which is a coat of arms. Three twelve-pane sashes are located above the arch. This section has a gabled roof topped with an 18th-century lead figure on a kneeler.
