Description

The Arches is a courtyard gateway from Wallington Hall, built in 1735 and re-erected as an eyecatcher in 1751. It is constructed from squared stone with ashlar dressings and features three bays. The central bay slightly projects and has a pediment with a semicircular arch, while the flanking bays and the returns have similar smaller arches. The piers have square bases with bulgy rustication and impost blocks. Above the flanking arches are sunk panels that hold double-headed busts from Aldersgate, London. The central bay is topped with heavy pyramidal finials adorned with dog-tooth ornament, which are supported by stone balls, while smaller but similar finials are located at each end of the facade, with truncated finials on the returns. Originally erected at Wallington Hall, it was found to be too narrow for coaches and was replaced by the Clock Tower Gate.
