Description

House, dating to the mid to late 18th century, incorporates the remains of a late 13th or 14th century dwelling. The front is constructed of brick, while the rear is of coursed limestone rubble, both now rendered. The medieval remains are of coursed dressed limestone with clay and rubble infill. The roof is concrete tiled with stone gable coping and kneelers, featuring a rebuilt brick end stack. The building has two storeys and a basement, with two windows at the front. A central four-panel door, with an overlight featuring margin lights in an architrave, is located at basement level. The windows are renewed sashes with glazing bars. A mid-19th century canted bay window on the right is characterized by fluted pilasters and a heavily-moulded cornice.

The rear wall includes the remains of the medieval dwelling at basement level, extending approximately 3 meters in height, 4.5 meters in length, and 0.7 meters in width, projecting an additional 3.35 meters northwards from the northeast corner of the building. This section contains the remains of two east-facing windows with splayed reveals and sills, now blocked with coursed stone. There is evidence of a plinth below ground level.

A section of medieval wall runs adjacent to the property. This wall is approximately 2.7 meters high, 0.7 meters wide, and includes evidence of a plinth below ground level. It projects 3.35 meters from the northeast corner of number 3 Barkers Place and also forms part of the eastern wall of the building. The projecting section has a concrete coping and brick repairs to the end, and features a central north-facing window with splayed reveals and a sill, now sealed with coursed stone. The southern portion of the wall has been incorporated into the main house’s wall, comprising approximately 3 meters of 14th-century coursed limestone and 18th-century coursed dressed limestone and rubble above. A similar blocked window with rubble fill is present within this section.
