Description
The garden walls and gate piers located to the south of Thornton Hall are likely from the 17th century, with the piers dating to the early 18th century. The walls are constructed of coursed rubble, while the piers are made of ashlar. A tall, partly rebuilt wall with flat coping connects to the west return of the hall. This wall extends west for 15 meters and then south for 100 meters to the main road. Near the north-west corner, there is a Tudor-arched doorway from the 19th century. Low rebuilt quadrant walls, featuring central gate piers, connect the west wall to the outer wall that encloses the south paddock. The pair of tall rebated piers display chamfered rustication and corniced caps topped with rounded pyramidal finials. A cross wall in front of the hall garden is not of special interest. This structure is included for its group value.
