Description

The farm buildings located at the rear of White Cross Farmhouse date from the early to mid-19th century. They are constructed of coursed and squared rubble that has been painted white, topped with a pantiled roof featuring stone-flagged eaves and a brick chimney stack. The buildings form a linked U-plan group and are described as follows, starting from the front left and moving clockwise.

There is a single-storey, one-bay, square-plan pavilion that was formerly a smithy. It has a tall plinth and an eaves band, with a boarded door on the right side. A 2-light window with a projecting flat-faced surround and a chamfered mullion is located on the front, and the roof is low-pitched and hipped over the front, with a lateral stack at the rear.

Next is a 2-storey, 5-bay stable and loose-boxes with a loft. This building features boarded doors and replaced casements facing the yard, along with partly-glazed hit-and-miss windows and replaced casements with projecting sills on the outer face. It also has a low-pitched hipped roof.

There is a single-storey, 4-bay range with blocked and altered openings to the yard, and it has 4 replaced casements with projecting sills on the outer face. A long 2-storey barn runs at right angles across the entire rear of the group, featuring large 20th-century openings on the left return and rear. The central 4-bay section, which was formerly a threshing barn, has large opposed Dutch doors and a hipped roof.

On the left rear of the barn is a single-storey, 3-bay cart shed, which has 3 segmental brick arches. There is also a long single-storey range with altered openings on the right return of the barn, and another long single-storey range with 2 segmental archways and 2 boarded doors at right angles to the right end of the barn. Finally, there is a shorter and slightly taller single-storey range at the front right, which has a large 20th-century vehicle opening on the front and a hipped roof over the front.

Additions at the rear and within the yard are not of special interest. The buildings are included for their group value.
