Description

Carmel House Convent is a plain early 19th-century convent building located on Nunnery Lane. It has a front elevation of two storeys with five windows, constructed from local pinkish brick. The roof is low pitched and hipped, featuring paired brackets at the eaves. The centre bay slightly projects and is topped with a gable, which contains a niche with a figure of a saint at the first-floor centre. The windows are recessed sash types with glazing bars, set under flat gauged brick arches. A stone plinth supports the structure. The main entrance features a six-panel double door with a fanlight, framed by a stone architrave, which appears to be of a later date.

The rear elevation reveals the original house, likely built in the late 18th century, which is also two storeys high and consists of three wide bays. The central bay has two windows, while the outer bays are canted with three windows each. This section is also made of pinkish brick and has a parapet over a stone cornice. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are set within wood architraves and feature flat gauged brick arches and stone cills. The central entrance on the rear has an eight-panel door in a replaced architrave, accessed by four modern steps. The right return of the building shows a window set in a round-arched recess and a further three-storey section with three windows. Inside, there is an early 19th-century staircase topped by a domed rooflight.
