Description
The Scarsike Head Guide Post, located on the north side of a road junction and one metre west of a wall, is a guide post likely dating from the 18th century. It is made of sandstone and stands about one metre high with dimensions of 15 by 20 centimeters, roughly squared. The post features well-shaped incised inscriptions on three faces. The west face includes the names Wolf Cleugh, New House, and an Ordnance Survey bench mark that obscures the lower part. The south face lists Lintz, Garth, Bay Bridge, and the number 5. The east face inscription is illegible. A historical reference from 1857 mentions that the post indicated New House, Wear Head, Middlehope, Westgate, Chapel, Wolf Cleugh, Allenheads, Lintz Garth, Bay Bridge, and Rokehope.
