Description
The Rookhope War Memorial is a granite structure approximately 4.5 meters tall, located to the west of Bolt’s Burn. It features a wheel-head cross with a reversed sword carved in low relief on the front face. The cross shaft rises from a small pedestal that sits on a tapering plinth, which is elevated by a two-stepped base.
On the front face of the small pedestal, the main dedicatory inscription reads: "FOR HOME AND COUNTRY. ERECTED TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM THIS PARISH WHO SERVED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-18." The front face of the plinth is inscribed with "THOSE WHO FELL" followed by names, while the other three faces contain the inscription "THOSE WHO RETURNED" along with lists of names. Additionally, a small tablet on the lower step of the base bears a later inscription that reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO SERVED IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945 KILLED IN ACTION" followed by names. All inscriptions are made with applied metal letters.
