Description
HUNDERTHWAITE B6277 NZ 02 SW (East side,off) 11/70 Summerhouse, 180 metres south-east of Woden Croft II Summerhouse. Early C19. Snecked, squared rubble. Stone-flagged roofs. Square-plan centre block with set-back flanking wings. Gothick style.
2-storey, one-bay centre block has flush quoins. Pointed-arched opening with flush voussoirs. Wall sundial above flanked by square stone panels with incised crosses. Sundial has moulded sill and is inscribed:
Disce bene vivere et mori A THOMAS BRANSOM hoc SOLARIUM, relictum est Gratitudinis in memoria pro doctri- na accepta apud Woden Croft Lodge ab AD 1807 utque 1815
(Learn to live and die well. This sundial was given by Thomas Branson in grateful memory of the teaching received at Woden Croft Lodge from 1807 to 1815). Centre block has low-pitched pyramidal roof.
Wings have flush quoins and single window openings with flush lintels and projecting sills. Flat-coped parapets,with end blocks, conceal lean-to roofs sloping down to rear.
This summerhouse is similar in design and date to an example known as Monks House. (See item 11/53).
