Description

The summerhouse, located 180 metres southeast of Woden Croft, dates from the early 19th century and is built from snecked, squared rubble with stone-flagged roofs. It features a square-plan central block with set-back flanking wings, designed in the Gothick style.

The two-storey, one-bay central block has flush quoins and a pointed-arched opening with flush voussoirs. Above the opening is a wall sundial, flanked by square stone panels with incised crosses. The sundial has a moulded sill and is inscribed with a message from Thomas Branson, expressing gratitude for the teaching he received at Woden Croft Lodge between 1807 and 1815, and it reads: "Disce bene vivere et mori A THOMAS BRANSOM hoc SOLARIUM, relictum est Gratitudinis in memoria pro doctrina accepta apud Woden Croft Lodge ab AD 1807 utque 1815" (Learn to live and die well. This sundial was given by Thomas Branson in grateful memory of the teaching received at Woden Croft Lodge from 1807 to 1815). The central block has a low-pitched pyramidal roof.

The wings of the summerhouse also have flush quoins and feature single window openings with flush lintels and projecting sills. Flat-coped parapets with end blocks conceal lean-to roofs that slope down to the rear. This summerhouse shares a similar design and date with another example known as Monks House.
