Description

Saltoun House is a house, originally a Wesleyan school, likely dating from the late 18th century and significantly altered around 1830. The front of the building is pebble-dashed with a dressed stone basement. It has a stone-flagged roof and stone chimney stacks.

The house is two storeys high, plus a basement, and is arranged with three wide bays. Raised-and-chamfered quoins are visible on the left-hand side. A set of seven stone steps lead to a central entrance featuring a partly-glazed six-panel door within an enriched, pedimented doorcase with decorative consoles. The basement, below a roll-moulded band, contains paired four-pane sashes set in projecting, tooled surrounds. Tripartite sash windows flank the doorway, and each has a projecting surround with stepped arched heads. A central sash window above, within a similar arched surround, is flanked by identical tripartite windows. The roof has a coped left gable with a shaped kneeler. A corniced stack at the left end and a stack to the right (positioned above the West Lodge) are set below the ridge and each features an ornamental chimney-pot.

West Lodge, attached to the right of the main house, is not included for its special architectural or historic interest.
