Description
Hallgarth Hill House is a house dating from the mid-18th century, with early 19th-century additions. It is constructed of squared rubble and features stone-flagged roofs along with stone and brick chimney stacks.
The house has a two-storey, three-bay main block, with a lower two-storey left bay that has been converted from a 20th-century byre. The building has flush quoins and a replaced four-panel door located to the right of center, set within a pedimented doorcase that has engaged Corinthian columns on low pedestals. Above the door is a square sundial in a moulded surround with a bracketed sill, an iron gnomon, and a ball finial, inscribed with "I.A. 1774" (John Askew). The windows flanking the door are replaced four-pane sashes in flush surrounds. The roof features coped gables and stone end stacks with top bands and water tables.
The left bay contains two four-pane sashes with flush lintels and projecting sills, and its roof has a coped left gable. The right end chimney has been rebuilt in brick.
At the rear of the main block, there is a continuous added outshut under a lean-to roof. A late 20th-century glazed addition to the left return is noted but is not considered of special interest.
