Description

Woden Croft is a house that was formerly a private academy run by Edward Simpson. It is dated 1792, as noted on the front door lintel, with additions from 1810 on the rear door lintel and later 19th-century additions at the back. The building is constructed of dressed sandstone, featuring a stone-flagged roof and stone chimney stacks. The main block has a set-back wing attached to the right.

The main block is two stories high and originally had five bays, with a projecting three-bay center; however, the left bay was demolished in the early 20th century. The three-bay center has flush quoins and a central partly-glazed four-panel door in a flush surround, with the door lintel inscribed "ENS 1792." The doorway is flanked by six-pane casements with flush sills and wedge lintels, and there are three identical windows above. The right bay features flush quoins, a canted bay window, and a tripartite window above with similar casements. The roof is hipped over the right bay and has a coped left gable, along with two ridge stacks that have top bands and water tables.

The one-bay wing is also two stories high and has flush quoins. It features two-light windows with similar casements on both floors and a low-pitched hipped roof. There is a tall lateral stack above the right return, which has a top band and water table. At the rear of the right return, there are remains of a semicircular-plan bread oven.

The interior has been altered and includes a dogleg staircase with two flights and a landing rail, featuring a moulded ramped handrail on thin turned balusters. Several imported two-panel doors with butterfly hinges are set in architraves.

There is a glazed late 20th-century conservatory attached to the left return, but this is not considered of special interest.
