Description

The University Library, built in 1882 by A.W. Blomfield, is a lecture room that has been converted into a library. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a stone flagged roof with stone gable copings. The building is designed in the Perpendicular style and consists of two storeys of varying heights and five bays.

The first bay is gabled and has steps leading up to a double door with wrought iron hinges set in a hollow-chamfered Tudor-arched surround. Above the door are carved spandrels and an arcaded panel in a square-headed moulded surround. There is a four-light window, with stone mullions and transoms, above this entrance, along with a first-floor string and a gable parapet string that includes corner gargoyles.

The right end of the building features an added Renaissance-style porch supported by Tuscan columns, an entablature with the words "UNIVERSITY LIBRARY" in low relief on the frieze, and obelisk finials. The round arch of the door has a long bracket from the key supporting the hood. Above this porch is a shallow canted bay with an eaves string and a moulded flat-coped parapet.

The central block has two large mullioned-and-transomed windows on the ground floor and three two-light mullioned windows on the first floor, each with elliptical heads. This section also includes a first-floor string, an eaves string with corner gargoyles, and a roll-moulded parapet. The roof is topped with roll-moulded gable copings and stone crown finials.

Inside, there is a large open-well stair featuring a twisted wrought-iron balustrade. The first-floor rooms have boarded dados, plaster walls, and roofs supported by bracketed queen posts and collars.
