Description
The former grammar school, now serving as the university police office, is located on the east side of Palace Green. Built in 1668 by Longstaffe for Bishop Cosin, this Tudor-style building is part of the left wing of an almshouse block. It features coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and a roof made of stone flags with stone gable coping. The structure consists of one storey and an attic, with one gabled bay and a narrow entrance bay on the right. The entrance includes a renewed studded and partly-glazed panelled door set within a flat Tudor-arched surround that has a label mould. The building also has renewed double-chamfered surrounds for two ground floor cross windows and a three-light attic window, all featuring stone mullions. The gable coping is supported by moulded kneelers, and there is a commemorative panel displaying a coat of arms with an eroded inscription located beneath the attic window.
