Description
Nos. 44 and 45 North Bailey are two houses that now serve as a University department. They feature an early 19th-century front on a 17th-century house. The building is constructed from snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, and while the roof is not visible, there are brick chimneys. The structure has three storeys and an attic, with five bays, the central bay being wider.
The central bay contains the entrance to No. 44 on the left, which features a boarded door and a two-pane overlight in a stone surround with a tongue-stopped chamfer. To the right, there is an eight-panel partly-glazed door set within a 17th-century stone doorcase that includes an architrave and a swan-neck open pediment supported by brackets, along with a cartouche. The sash windows, most of which have glazing bars, include some from the late 19th century and are topped with flat stone lintels and sloping projecting stone sills. The ground-floor windows were inserted into blocked shops and also have stone sills.
Inside No. 44, there is a dog-leg-closed-string staircase featuring a flat-topped moulded-edge handrail supported by widely spaced alternating turned and square balusters.
