Description

The Durham Light Infantry South African War Memorial is a memorial dedicated to the South African War, dated 1905. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and designed in a Celtic style. The memorial features a very tall cross with a boss that stands on a square step. It is decorated with entwined oak leaves that contain low-relief carvings depicting scenes from the war. An inscription commemorates those who died from wounds or disease, or were killed in action between 1899 and 1902, with the names of the deceased inscribed on the base. A chamfered dwarf wall encloses a flagged surround.
