Description
The Priory Prison and former stables, located north of number 15, are significant buildings dating from the medieval period and the 19th century. The structure features coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and a stone-flagged roof. The prison has a round-headed entrance on the ground floor, which includes a draw-bar slot, situated to the left of the stable block. The stable block itself contains two boarded doors, one Dutch door, and two two-light windows on the left side, along with seven inserted square-headed windows on the right. The first floor has three loft openings with wooden lintels above a boarded door on the left and some louvres on the right, which have been renewed. The roof is hipped.
Inside, the basement prison has a stone newel stair leading to the ground floor, with three bays visible at the west end and possibly five further bays at the east, which are now blocked. The altered arcades feature round columns with scalloped capitals supporting chamfered segmental arches that have been blocked to form the north and south walls of the chamber. The north wall of the stable block is said to display the sills of the south windows of the reredorter. The building is noted for its medieval components.
