Description

Fulling Mill Archaeology Museum is a water mill and house that dates from the 17th and 18th centuries, likely incorporating earlier elements. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, sandstone rubble with brick dressings, and features a dark brick top floor in English garden wall bond. The roof is pantiled with four rows of stone slates at the eaves. The building has three storeys and an attic, with four bays on the north elevation. A mill race runs under a segmental ashlar arch in the third bay, accompanied by a boarded door and a two-light window to the left under a wood lintel. The three-light windows with central casements have elliptical brick arches with brick keys and tile fill, and the first floor features brick jambs in rubble. The hipped roof has slightly-swept eaves and a square-headed ridge dormer. The left return displays a chamfered two-centred arch at the left, with the springing of an incomplete arch projecting.

Inside, there is an armorial of Bishop Langley (1406-1437) on the east wall, which is said to have been removed from the North Gate. The interior also features a wide closed-string stair with square newels and varied balusters. The house in the left rear wing is said to contain a dog-leg closed string stair with a wavy rail and moulded handrail.
