Description
This is a barn located 40 metres east of Castle Farmhouse, built in the mid-18th century and altered around 1800. It is constructed of coursed rubble with cut quoins and dressings, featuring a tooled band at the first floor level and a graduated stone slate roof. The south elevation is two storeys high, with five bays and slightly projecting entrance bays at each end. The central section has a first floor band, with blocked doors and windows at ground level, and a tall first floor that includes a stable door set in an alternating-block surround, along with slit vents. The end bays also have blocked doors, windows, and slit vents positioned at the top.
The left side of the barn features a first floor band, a ground floor window, a boarded pitching door, and three slit vents, as well as an owl hole in the gable; the right side is similar. The recessed central part of the rear wall was rebuilt to align with the ends around 1800 and includes an external stone stair leading to an upper door, along with slit vents and roof weathering from a now-removed wheelhouse. There are attached single-storey farmbuilding ranges on the south and east sides, but these are not of special interest.
