Description
The Howden-le-Wear War Memorial is a granite structure approximately 4 meters tall, located on the east side of High Street near the junction with Bridge Street. It is designed as an obelisk, square in shape, which rises from a tapering pedestal. On the front face of the obelisk, a sheathed sword is carved in low relief, hanging from its sword belt at the pyramidal top, with a wreath carved below it. The pedestal is set on a two-stage base, which is elevated by two low steps. Surrounding the memorial is a square enclosure made of a plain metal rail supported by low, pyramidal posts.
The front-facing pediment features the inscription "LEST WE FORGET." Below this, the main dedicatory inscription on the pedestal reads: "TO THE HONOUR AND IN SACRED MEMORY OF THE BRAVE MEN FROM HOWDEN-LE-WEAR AND DISTRICT WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 (NAMES)." The names of the fallen continue onto the upper stage of the base, followed by the years 1939 – 1945 and additional names from the Second World War recorded on the lower stage.
