Description
The Stevenson tomb, located close to the south wall of the chancel in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, is a chest tomb dating from around 1631. It commemorates John and Ambreas Stevenson. The tomb is made of sandstone and features large slabs that form a chest on a wider base, topped with a flat overhanging coping. The inscription on the tomb reads: "HERE LYETH THE BODY / OF JOHN STEVENSON (sic) / GENTLEMAN LORD AND / MASTER OF BIERSID / WHO / DEPARTED TO THE MARCY / OF GOD THE 17 DAY OF SEP/TEMBER IN THE MORNE/ING / AND WAS BVERED / THE 18 DAY AT NIGHT / ANO DOMNI 1639" and "HEAR LIES THE BODY / OF AMBREAS STEVEN/SON OF BIERSID THE YOUNGER DEPARTED / THIS LIFE THE SIXT / DAY OF OCTOBER / IN THE YEAR / OF OUR LORD GOD / ANO 1689."
