Description

Prospect House is a house dating to circa 1820, representing a rebuilding of a late 18th-century structure. It is constructed of pecked and margined sandstone ashlar with tooled dressings and chamfered quoins; the right return and rear are of rubble. The roof is of graduated Lakeland slate with an ashlar chimney. The house is two storeys and has a basement, with a three-window front. A renewed glazed door, with a multi-pane overlight, is set within a pedimented Tuscan doorcase, the entablature projecting forward over free-standing columns on plinths. Sash windows with glazing bars are present, along with a late 19th-century window on the first floor to the right, all set in plain stone surrounds. The low-pitched hipped roof has a wide, corniced chimney. The street elevation features a six-panel double door and overlight, a round-headed stair window, and sashes with glazing bars, all in plain surrounds.

Inside, the narrow open-well stair has a rounded handrail on stick balusters, with a wreath and curtail to the newel. Original cast-iron grates remain, one featuring fruit and flower decoration. Some original plain chimney pieces are also present. Stucco ceiling cornices are found in the principal ground-floor rooms; that to the left depicts fruit and flower decoration, while that to the right is moulded and was extended when a partition was removed between the hall and a room. An elliptical archway fills the hall, leading to a panelled door and a fanlight with mock glazing bars. All windows have panelled shutters, and all doors are panelled within architraves. Cupboards flanking the fire in the rear left room have square top doors with one fielded panel and L hinges. In the basement, a blocked kitchen range remains, with a cast iron oven by Porter and Co., Carlisle, and it has a tooled stone lintel and surround. The floor is of stone flags.
