Description
Chare Top Cottage is a building that consists of two houses now combined, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with some alterations. It is constructed from sandstone rubble with a rubble plinth and features very large quoins. The roof is made of graduated Lakeland slate and has a yellow brick chimney. The building is two storeys high and has three bays.
A 20th-century door with side lights has been inserted in place of the original paired central doors, which had irregular outer jambs and a concrete lintel. On either side of the door, there are short, wide margined sash windows, with a rendered lintel on the left and a stone lintel on the right. The first floor features a two-light horizontal sliding sash window on the left and a three-light horizontal sliding sash window on the right, which includes some glazing bars, both situated under the eaves. There is a chimney at the left end of the building.
Inside, the cottage has very thick walls and deep splays to the window reveals, except for part of one window on the ground floor. The ground-floor room on the right has a plain stone fire lintel and jambs, while the room above has a low stone lintel with brick jambs and a hood. There are flues leading to the left chimney of the adjacent Wheldon House. A large, irregular oak beam runs along the centre of the entrance passage and has wide dowel holes, with a similar beam above the door. A rear extension is noted but is not of interest.
