Description
The limekilns, located approximately 100 metres south of Haig Street, are now used as coal storage hoppers. They were likely built in the mid-19th century for Chilton Lime Works and consist of two structures. The buildings are made from limestone rubble with a coursed squared sandstone plinth and brick dressings, along with some brick patching.
The first structure on the left features a stone plinth supporting three semicircular arches, each made with three header courses of yellow bricks. The rubble walls show varied brick patching, including some large yellow bricks. The left return has a full-height sloping buttress made of rubble.
The second structure on the right has rubble walls with three segmental brick arches resting on rubble jambs. Each arch includes a brick vault and a rear wall, with two openings, some of which are blocked and have coal chutes inserted.
