Description

Low Stonechester is a farmhouse dating from the early 18th century, with some alterations. The building is constructed of thinly-rendered rubble, featuring large millstone grit quoins and ashlar dressings. It has a pantile roof, with two rows of stone flags at the rear eaves and rendered chimneys. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has two bays, along with a one-storey, one-bay extension on the right.

The north elevation includes flat stone lintels and sills above large ground-floor windows, which have 6-pane fixed lights beneath 4-pane transoms. The first-floor windows are horizontal sliding sashes, also beneath 4-pane transoms at the eaves level. The roof has swept eaves and square end chimneys with top strings. The right extension is blank and set back. At the rear, there is a door in a one-storey, one-bay outshut that has a catslide roof, as well as a flat-roofed 20th-century two-storey, one-bay extension.

Inside, there is a two-panel door between two ground-floor rooms, a long, slightly arched fire beam with a small cupboard above it, which is now papered over. The L-plan stair is located in the outshut and features a plain handrail and lower rail. The roof trusses in the first-floor rooms show the feet of the principals below the eaves.
