Description
The monument to Frederick Hardwicke is located 15 metres north of the west tower of the Church of St. Edmund. It was created in 1854 by M. Spark and is made of sandstone, standing about 2.0 metres high. The monument features a square base that supports a rectangular pedestal with a projecting pedimented top. Each corner of the pedestal has an attached Tuscan colonette, and it is inscribed in Gothic lettering with some scrollwork: "IN MEMORY OF FREDERICK HARDWICKE (BOLTON), AGED 21 YEARS, SERJEANT IN THE VITH INNISKILLING DRAGOONS WHO FELL IN THE MEMORABLE CHARGE OF HEAVY CAVALRY AT BALAKLAVA ON THE 25TH OF OCTOBER, MDCCCLIV. BELOVED BY ALL WHO KNEW HIM." The pedimented top features a blank shield in the tympanum.
