Description
Hardwick Hall Hotel is a country house that has been converted into a hotel, originally shown on the Ordnance Survey map as a maternity home. It dates from the mid-18th century and may include parts of an older structure, with alterations made in the early 20th century. The building features pebble-dashed masonry and brick, topped with Welsh slate roofs and rebuilt brick chimneys.
The hotel is designed in an L-shape with a rear wing on the right, standing two storeys plus an attic and comprising five bays, with flanking two-storey, one-bay wings. The central entrance has a later, part-glazed porch supported by four Roman Doric columns, with an entablature and double doors flanked by three-pane sidelights. Inside, there are two-panel, part-glazed inner double doors beneath a segmental fanlight, accompanied by three-pane sidelights and elongated 12-pane sash windows.
The front facade features mainly replaced 12-pane sash windows, a first-floor band, and a dentilled eaves cornice. The low-pitched hipped roof includes two dormers with segmental pediments and two ridge chimneys. The set-back wings have semi-octagonal returns, a first-floor band, and mainly replaced 12-pane sashes, with a low-pitched roof hipped over the returns. The two-storey, 11-bay rear wing has two-pane sashes on the ground floor and replaced 12-pane sashes above, with a roof that includes five ridge chimneys. The interior was remodeled in the early 20th century. There are also additions to the left rear and a detached stable block, which are not considered of special interest.
