Description

The Serpentine Bridge is a bridge built around 1754, designed by James Paine for John Bourdon of Herdwick Hall, and constructed by John Bell of Durham. It is made of ashlar stone and features a single wide elliptical arch that is slightly raised in the center. The arch has voussoirs and a drip mould, and it once supported a parapet adorned with pierced quatrefoils and rounded coping. The bridge was created as part of the new landscape garden layout designed for John Bourdon.
