Description

The White House comprises a pair of early 18th-century houses located on the east side of North End, Sedgefield. The buildings are constructed of rendered brick and rubble walls, with a 20th-century concrete-tiled roof and rebuilt brick chimneys. Each house has two storeys and three bays. Number 34, on the right, features a late 18th-century six-panel door with a patterned overlight, set within a 19th-century doorcase featuring reeded pilasters. Number 36 has a replacement six-panel door in a 20th-century doorcase with a pediment. The windows are replaced 12-pane sashes in shallow, rounded reveals, with projecting sills to those on Number 34. A continuous wooden eaves cornice runs along the top. The steeply-pitched roof has slightly-swept eaves and raised verges with small shaped kneelers, as well as two end and two ridge chimneys. The interior of Number 34 retains several two-panel doors and a three-flight, open-well staircase with a cut string. The staircase has column-on-vase balusters and a ramped handrail.
