Description

This is a group of four early to mid 18th century headstones located approximately 25 meters north of the chancel of the Church of St Andrew in Bishop Auckland. They are made of sandstone.

The first headstone, situated about 20 meters north of the church, commemorates John Downes, who died in 1730. It features a slab that is approximately 0.4 meters high, with moulded sides and a shallow bracket top. The reverse side displays three castles, resembling the arms of the town of Newcastle.

The second headstone is located approximately 3 meters northwest of the first and is dedicated to Ann Crow, who died in 1724. This headstone stands about 0.5 meters high and has a bracketed top, adorned with deeply-cut six-petal roses at the base of its curves.

The third headstone is about 2 meters north of the second and is dedicated to Dorothy Wilkinson, though the date of her death is obscured by earth. This slab is approximately 0.4 meters high and features a scalloped top.

The fourth headstone is located approximately 5 meters north of the first and commemorates Robert Dixon, who died in the 1760s. This slab is also about 0.4 meters high and has a three-scalloped top, with the central arch depicting the head of an angel and the others representing wings.
