Description
The war memorial is located approximately 20 meters south of the northern lych gate at the Church of St Andrew in Bishop Auckland. It was constructed around 1920 to commemorate those who died in the First World War (1914-1918). The memorial is made of ashlar stone and features a curb and piers surrounding a three-stepped square base that supports a tall tapered cross designed in the Saxon style. This design imitates 8th and 9th century cross fragments found within the Church of St Andrew and includes interlace patterns and inhabited vine scrolls. The cross head features a boss and armpits, along with roll-ended arms. The stepped base displays long lists of names of the deceased, many of whom served in the Durham Light Infantry.
